Checkpoint 1
The water in Spooky Swamp acts differently from that in the rest of the game, as it is infested with piranhas that will hurt Spyro if he lands in it. This water is associated with a progress-halting glitch in the PS1 version known as the Lost Gem Glitch; go to Checkpoint 3 for details.
Right when you start the level, check the area to collect three Green Gems, a Red Gem, and two Baskets with Gold and Purple Gems. Kill the Alligator up ahead to get a Red Gem, then talk to Homer the Firefly. As you might notice, the Fireflies here all speak in haikus! Climb into the giant lantern, Lantern #1 of 4, and Flame its candle to light it. Exit out the other side and check your right for a Purple Gem, and your left for a Purple and Green Gem. Flame the Shrimpin' Rhynoc with the lantern on the bridge to get his Purple Gem, then kill the Gator and the Slingshot Rhynoc on the other side to get their Red and Green Gems.
Up ahead will be an incomplete bridge to the next lantern. Check underneath it to collect a Red Gem, two Baskets with Green Gems, and two Headbash Chests with a total of one Red Gem, four Green Gems, three Purple Gems and two Gold Gems. Now jump up the steps leading to the bridge with the two Red Gems and Flame the Mosquito to get his Red Gem.
Checkpoint 2
Glide across the gap in the bridge and climb up the ladder to Flame the Lantern #2's candle. Explore underneath Lantern #2 to collect two Red Gems, two Baskets with a Green and Purple Gem, and three Vases with a Green Gem and two Purples. Continue forward so you can kill and Alligator for a Red Gem and a Shrimpin' Rhynoc with a Purple Gem with a second to his left.

Before Gliding across the next bridge, check behind Spyro to his left to spot a Red Gem on a ledge close to the water, two Vases with a Green and Purple Gem, and a Locked Chest between the roots of the tree that you can't open yet. Return to the bridge and look to the left of it to find an island with two Baskets holding Purple Gems, and a Dragon Egg with baby Michael.
Now Glide across the bridge for real this time and kill the Slingshot Rhynoc on the other side for a Green Gem. Look to your right here to pick up two Red Gems on the ground and a Green Gem in a window. Continue following the path to smash two Vases with Green Gems, then kill the Alligators on the bridge for their Red Gems.
On the other side of the bridge, pick up the Purple Gem before checking the area below Lantern #3 to Charge three Vases with a Purple, Green and Gold Gem, and open a Headbash Chest with two Red Gems, two Green Gems and a Purple Gem. Now climb up the ladder into Lantern #3 to pick up two Red Gems and Flame its candle. Jump out and continue down the stone path.
Up ahead will be two spots with Mosquitos flying over the water, one behind the Shrimpin' Rhynoc here and another near a pier. If you're playing the PS1 version of Year of the Dragon, there is a bad glitch here that is easily run into called the Lost Gem Glitch. It involves killing a Mosquito while he's above the water, causing his Gem to fall in. Unlike most bodies of water, the piranha water in Spooky Swamp won't give Spyro any Gems that fall into it out of convenience, meaning any that fall into it are lost forever .
As such, it is vital that you lure the Mosquitos over solid ground before you kill him, otherwise his Red Gem won't be able to be collected. This affects passage into the game's final, bonus level. If one of their Red Gems does fall into the water, immediately switch off your console (PS1) / quit out of the game (PS3, PSP & Vita) to avoid the game's autosave and start the level over again.
Checkpoint 3
Flame the Shrimpin' Rhynoc at the water's edge to get his Purple Gem, then collect the Red Gem behind him before Gliding across the water and killing the Slingshot Rhynoc for his Green Gem. Pick up the Green Gem behind him, then open the two Baskets to the right side of the path to collect a Purple and Gold Gem. Kill the two Alligators further down the path, then talk to Moneybags. You'll have to pay him 500 Gems to open the door.
Go through the door and kill the Shrimpin' Rhynoc on the other side for his Purple Gem, then look right to find three Baskets with two Green Gems and a Purple Gem. Don't forget to check behind the door Moneybags opened to find another Basket with a Gold Gem.

Carefully kill the Mosquito here over solid ground so that you can collect his Red Gem. Glide over to a kill the Slingshot Rhynoc for his Green Gem, them pick up the two Green Gems around him before crossing the bridge on the right. Kill the Alligator at the end, pick up the two Red Gems, then kill the Slingshot Rhynoc bullying the Firefly to get is Green Gem. Talk to Shiny the Firefly to get a Dragon Egg with baby Thelonius.
Checkpoint 4
That taken care of, turn around and climb the ladder to Lantern #4 and Flame the candle to open a door of the castle with a Challenge Portal. Ignore it for now and Glide out the other side of the lantern to the grassy ledge with a Red and Green Gem on it. Climb the ladder to get on top of the tree and head right to get to an elongated tree top. At the end of it, look left to spot a tree top with a Dragon Egg on it, with baby Frank inside.
Use a Charge Jump to Glide and Hover manoeuvre to Glide from the Egg tree to the next tree top further along the wall. From there you can Glide to the last tree top with a Key on it! Turn around and now backtrack through the level past the blue lantern to where the yellow one is. Check in the roots of the tree here to find the Locked Chest and open it with the Key, releasing a Red Gem, two Green Gems, two Purple Gems and a coveted Pink Gem. To quickly get back to the castle, backtrack to the very start of the level and check the water for an island that now has a Whirlwind on it that will take you back.
From the Return Home Portal, follow the path clockwise around the castle to find a Basket with a Purple Gem, a Green Gem on the left, Bubba the Firefly, two Baskets with Gold Gems, and a Challenge Portal for Sheila. The first thing we're going to do is tackle the miniboss fight inside the castle. If you haven't already, Flame all four Lanterns in the level to open the door to the Challenge Portal next to Bubba the Firefly.
Defeat Sleepy Head
advertisement
Sleepyhead starts by throwing a bomb at you. After settling on the ground, a quick timer will count down to its detonation. Charge it so that it flies into Sleepy Head and explodes, taking off a quarter of his health. After this, Sleepy Head will summon three Alligators you have to deal with before throwing another bomb. Repeat the process to whittle Sleepy Head down to 0 health and get a Dragon Egg with baby Herbi.
Twin Challenges
Next is Sheila's portion of the level, accessed via the Challenge Portal to the left of the one to Sleepy Head. In the opening area, collect the Red Gems and the Green Gem, then smash the Basket to collect a Purple Gem. Kick the rock in the doorway to progress forward, then follow the wall left to collect two Red Gems. You'll want to ignore the twin Fireflies here so you can collect all the Gems in the area up ahead.
First, stand at the left-hand wall and look up it to find a cracked spot. Double Jump (that is, Jump when Shiela lands on the ground) to launch up to it and Kick it down, revealing an alcove with two Green Gems. Jump back down and follow the along the left-hand wall to find two Red Gems.
Proceed into the next area to find two Green Gems along the left wall and two Red Gems on the right. Further along the left-hand wall will be two Baskets with Green Gems flanking a doorway blocked by a rock. Kick it down and go inside to find a Headbash Chest holding a Red Gem, two Green Gems and two Purple Gems. Do a Double Jump (Jump when Sheila lands) to reach up the back wall and kick down the cracked portion, revealing an alcove with a Gold Gem.

Back in the main area, keep following the left-hand wall to get to another doorway to a little room, this one with two Headbash Chests. In total they contain two Red Gems, three Green Gems, two Purple Gems and a Gold Gem. Bash down the cracked wall just like in the last small room to reveal a hidden room with six Green Gems and a Chest with a Purple Gem. Return to the main area and keep following the left-hand wall to find three more Red Gems. From the third, look right to spot another Red Gem on the opposite wall.
At the next bend, you can find a Red Gem on the right-hand wall, three Red Gems on the left-hand wall, and another Red Gem lying next to the path. At the house at the end of the path, you can collect four Red Gems, as well as two Baskets and two Vases with Gold Gems. Finally, check behind the house for a large stone wall: it's uncracked, but Sheila is able to Kick it down and get to a coveted Pink Gem!
Escort the Twins I
Now to do the Challenge itself. Before starting it, sweep the entirety of the path and destroy all eleven rocks to make things easier. Talk to one of the twins to start the Challenge. What you need to do is destroy all the rocks and Stomp all the mushrooms to clear the way for the twins as they go down the path with the bombs. Since you already destroyed all the rocks, you can concentrate on stomping the mushrooms, which do pop up after being left alone for a while.
The first Twin will hop along the main path almost exactly, making it easy to predict which mushrooms to Stomp. Don't be afraid to Stomp near the twin, as Sheila won't damage them. About two-thirds of the way through is a part of the path where the twin loops around near a house and goes past one of the mushrooms again, so be ready to Stomp that one a second time to make sure he doesn't get blasted. Get him to the end of the path, and he'll free the Dragon Egg with baby Peggy.
Escort the Twins II
The second twin is a slightly different story: despite taking a much more winding path, if you've taken out the rocks he'll actually be simpler to deal with. If the rocks are gone, you'll actually have to start at a mushroom near where the first twin looped around near the house. There are only two more mushrooms after that, making the second twin the easiest of the two. Get him to the end and he'll free a Dragon Egg with Michele.

The final thing to do here is to get this level's Skill Point back in the main level, which is earned by destroying all seven of the Piranha Signs in the level. Glide back to the starting area to destroy Sign #1 at the water's edge. Sign #2 can be found by going through Lantern #1 and crossing the bridge on the other side; it'll be on the right-hand side. Sign #3 can be found on the cliff edge overlooking the water underneath Lantern #2.
Sign #4 can be found by Gliding across the first broken bridge that takes you to the foot of the castle; on the other side, check under the arch to your right to find it hiding there. Cross over the next bridge and you can find Sign #5 on your left and Sign #6 on your right. Glide over the gap across the water and head right to find Sign #6 just before the door Moneybags opens. Sign #7 can be found by going to the Return Home Portal and following the path left through the arch. Destroy it to get the Skill Point!
